Kiwi Road
When we were at State Forest State Park in 2011 we did Kiwi Road as part of Bull Mountain. Now that we had better information, we realized that Bull Mountain goes straight through without looping. So, we combined South Canadian Road and Kiwi Road into one just to make things easier. Now, the two roads cross each other.
We just came off of Ruby Jewel and had a great time. We went up to do Custer Draw Road, but it was closed with a big piece of machinery on the other side of a makeshift gate. They do a lot of logging work in the area, so we'd need to do that trail some other time.
We found the Kiwi Road trailhead at South Canadian Road easily enough and headed down. This trail was more in the open and out of the trees compared to what we'd seen so far that day. It was nice to get in the sun, even though we were occasionally in cloud cover.
At the intersection, it would have been difficult to figure out without good signs and the maps we had. The park puts out a good trail map that we recommend picking up before heading out to the area.
We actually wandered around a bit before coming back to Kiwi Road to finish the trail. First we did Gould Mountain and the eastern part of Bull Mountain. We we finally went down to Kiwi Road, it was a great way to end the day because it was beautiful. It was just like we remembered. There were patches of Columbine flowers, deep woods, and big views when there were breaks in the trees.
We headed out Bull Mountain and decided we were done for the day. It was early enough to have a good dinner, and we enjoyed the rest of our evening at the Ranger Lakes Campground.
