Saxon Mountain
We left Starbucks at 9:15 and immediately made a stop for a second breakfast at Burger King. We took the old highway to the reservoir crossing in Georgetown and worked our way to Main street where we turned back eastward. The trail begins as a continuation of Main Street.
The lower section of 11 switchbacks was much rockier than it had been earlier this summer. Many of the switchback turns needed a quick pick of a good line while turning to avoid stopping or backing and using a different line for the turn. Most of the lower section is wide enough for two vehicles to pass. We also encountered three 2-foot diameter boulders sunning themselves in the middle of the road. In 2002, the Forest Service said this road was impassable to stock vehicles, so it must receive some periodic maintence as it was clear and very easy earlier this summer. There are numerous spurs which go to mine areas -- mostly marked as private property.
Above the lookout pullout the trail become easier although 14 more switchbacks must be negotiated. At about 5 miles, we continued on to Saxon Mountain as the Larmatine-Saxon trail turned to the left. We meet one Jeep on this short spur section and saw two ATVs parked at the end of trail. One motorcycle came and went while we were exploring the end of trail area and enjoying the views.
