Georgetown Ice Races
This was a Georgetown Fun Day, and for $5.00 we got to race all day. There were no official competitions, we all just got in line and raced each other from 9AM until about 2PM. We got better with each race and we're all just about ready to do some real racing.
The day started out with very few vehicles but ended up with at least 30 four-wheel-drive vehicles racing. There was a group of Subaru WRX drivers too, which made things interesting. We largely raced each other but sometimes we'd end up racing strangers.
The cones were out and there were some people from the Our Gang group (the people who organize the Ice Races). There were no judges though, so we would wait in line until the race in front of us had finished, then line ourselves up to start. A look across the ice at a competitor usually would get a "ready, set, GO" hand signal and the race would start. It was very casual and we probably got to race about 15 times each.
Lorin also learned to drive, which was cool! Monica and Lorin went off to the side where a track from a previous weekend was etched in the ice. Lorin not only drove for the first time, but she drove a standard transmission on ice and did really well. We practiced awhile, then she went on to win her first two races. It was very impressive!
Lorin raced someone in his tow rig, who then asked us if we wanted to go for a ride in his studded vehicle named "Wild Fire" -- and of course we said "yes!" Bob had gone for a couple rides in the morning and we were all jealous. It was fast, loud, and a blast. It really made our Jeeps seem so slow in comparison, but we were sliding all over the place as usual.
Though we all did very well, it was probably Matt who did the best out of our group of racers. He won the most often, no matter how hard we tried to beat him.
We went to Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs for a very late lunch, then headed back to town in a snow storm that extended all the way to Denver. Though it snowed most of the day it
was still a great time because it wasn't too cold. We got a lot of practice in and we're ready to take on the world now!
