Adams Lake
This trail ended up being one of our absolute favorites for the entire weekend. It offered a little bit of everything -- both scenery and challenging sections. It was a great trail!
We started it after visiting Heart Lake and completing Coffee Pot Road. It was pouring rain when we were at the lake, but then it mellowed out and stopped raining as we started Adams Lake.
It started out really bumpy, with big ruts in the road and little puddles everywhere. We were all a little bummed, thinking it would be yet another trail filled with jostling around our Jeeps. We past the Transfer Trail trailhead, planning on coming back to it on the way out.
Soon enough, the trail got very scenic and the bumpiness mellowed out. It wasn't nearly as bad, and we were finally enjoying the trail.
Soon we came to the intersection with the spur to Adams Lake. The trail was muddy, with a big puddle at the bottom. We looked at it anxiously, and Mike decided he would be the guinea pig and the first one to try the hill.
He went up the hill and found that it was slick but definitely doable. He slid around a bit at the top, but made it just fine. He called for the others to come up, and we all followed up to the top of the hill. It was slick and it wouldn't be possible without 4-wheel drive and some good clearance, but we all had a good time sliding around to the top.
The rest of the spur was pretty short, and soon we were at the lake. There was plenty of room for us to park right next to it. Some people were camping, and it looked like a great camp spot.
We got out and checked out the lake, and it was really gorgeous. It was probably our favorite lake so far. Trees surrounded it on the side where we were, and a huge ridge surrounded the other side. Some people were standing at the top of the ridge, calling down to the people at the lake. There was a trail at the top, too, but we wouldn't have time to check it out this trip.
We slid our way back down the spur and continued on the trail. The rocks were strange in this area, sticking out of the ground in odd ways. They were also a single gray color and very smooth. It kept getting rockier, and soon we found ourselves at some bigger rocks.
We all had a great time getting through the first section of rocks. It involved a shelf that went all the way across the trail. It was muddy and slick, and it kept getting slicker with each passing Jeep. Don decided to try it in 2-wheel drive and soon found himself sideways in the obstacle. He worked his way over to the edge and got himself through it.
We kept going and soon found another slick obstacle. Monica tried to crawl it, but soon found that it would require some momentum. Everyone else hit it with some speed and did just fine.
We were really enjoying ourselves now. Everyone had big grins on their faces, slipping and sliding around in the mud and trying to get through rocks that were almost impossible to grip. The sun came out and it was gorgeous all around us as we came out of the rocks and found ourselves next to Bison Lake.
Heart Lake was gorgeous from this end, too. We circled past the trailhead and through the bumpy section again until we found the trailhead for Transfer Trail. We were all in a great mood after Adams Lake, one of our favorite trails so far.
