This trail turned out to be more scenic and more fun than we had hoped! The views from the bottom of Red Cone made it seem even bigger, and the bridge gave almost everyone a little trouble. It was wet and sloppy, with logs moving all over the place.

It wasn't as dusty as we thought it was going to be, which was good. When we got to the bridge we were relaxed and taking in the sights. We were all grinning by the time we made it over the slimey logs, though. Everyone tried a few lines and some worked better than others. As long as you are careful not to impale your vehicle on a log, straight up the middle seemed to work for pretty much everyone.

We had lunch just before timberline, right in the shadow of Red Cone. It was already starting to get chilly and it remained rainy and cold the rest of the day. We started up the switchbacks, trying to keep our eyes on the road instead of watching a group coming down Red Cone. At about the middle of the switchbacks you can see the entire Red Cone trail from the top to the bottom. It was very cool!

Some of us flew down the other side of switchbacks while others took it easy. When we got to the meadow we took the Radical Hill trail out rather than the other part of Webster Pass. We took that part after Red Cone in July because Radical Hill was still snowed in. The rest of Webster Pass is short and fairly uneventful.

It was a great trail and I'm sure it will be one we run every year.

We had some concerns about our ability to make it across Webster Pass.  We’d read recent reports that said the snow near the pass was still there, and some said it was impossible to get through.  Luckily, Roger had come across the pass just a couple days before and he…
