This was our second trail for the day, having run Bunce School Road earlier in the day. We started near the Gold Hill end of the trail, and went into Gold Hill to take a look. There wasn't much there, so we headed back to the trail.

About a half-mile down the trail we came up on a family in a stock vehicle, sitting in the middle of the trail. They pulled up, but blocked a nice steep spur to the north side of the trail. We indicated we were going up the spur and got a strange look. They were muttering as we went up the spur. At the top was a great place for lunch, so we stopped and ate.

We passed through the picnic area at Mount Alto Park and continued to the little town of Sunset. Bob had been on the trail before and knew the way on towards Sugarloaf Mountain -- it can be a little confusing. We found a nice loop with a little rocky place to take pictures, but the trail is otherwise very mellow but pretty. It is a good leaf peeping trail for the fall. We also found a wrecked car off the road that had been there for years.

We ended this trail at the beginning of Sugarloaf Mountain, which on some maps is part of Switzerland Trail.

Though it’s not a difficult trail, Switzerland Trail is special because it’s scenic and interesting. Along the way, you can imagine what the train ride used to be like as you wind your way between blasted rock and along the edges of steep drop-offs. The cloudy skies were cloudy as…
