Moffat Tunnel Road
We had been running the first part of this trail for a decade but we'd never taken it all the way out to the end. It was definitely time to check it out. We had a great brunch at the Stage Stop and aired down there in the parking lot. Then it was a quick trip across the street to the trail.
It starts out easy and it stays easy and scenic all the way to the end. We had sunny weather but rain was in the forecast. We were definitely enjoying the nice morning. We passed the bright yellow school house and drove through Tolland, now with cones in the middle of the road to slow traffic down.
It was so green and pretty, but we left it for a bit to go do Rollins Pass East and Jenny Creek. The trails took longer than expected so it was dinner time when we were finished. Still, we wanted to see the whole road. We drove to the end at the parking area.
The fans were so loud! We checked things out, taking a few pictures. It was cool to finally see the tunnel. It would be even better to take the California Zephyr through it. It was really loud, so we didn't hang out for very long.
We worked our way back and stopped at the information area. The old Moffat Tunnel sign was still there, but there was a new parking area with informational signs everywhere. It was really nice, and we read everything. It's amazing what life was like back then.
Though this is a very easy dirt road it's full of history, technological marvels, and scenery. We will definitely be back.
