Mammoth Gulch
Mammoth Gulch isn't a destination trail unless you're looking for some crowded camping. But, we were in the area and there isn't much that is more interesting to see than a drained reservoir. We finished Kingston Peak, so we had to check it out.
We skipped the dead-end portion that ends at a gate, the southern fork of the trail. It's not interesting, and it's tough to turn around at the end. Instead, we went straight to the reservoir.
The reservoir has been gone for a while, of course. Gary told us once about what it looked like before, with lots of water and a trail around it. The remaining valley is gorgeous and marshy, and we hung out there for a while just chatting and enjoying the fading day.
Jeffrey and Roger decided to head back home while the rest of us decided to head into Rollinsville for dinner. We aired up at the Moffat Tunnel Road parking area. The signs there are not well maintained, and the parking area was overgrown. Too bad, as it was a great idea.
Dinner at the Stage Stop restaurant was relaxing and perfect. We sat on the patio and waved at a freight train. We all got home before the sun went down, and that's a pretty amazing feat for our group. It was a really great day.
