Kingston Peak
It was a perfect run with perfect weather and a great group. Since we had three stock vehicles on this trip we didn't spend much time airing down, but a couple of us decided it would make the trip a little smoother so we went ahead and aired down. We had two new members and one member who hadn't gone on a trip with us for a year. This was a special trip because there was only one Jeep -- usually our runs are almost all Jeeps.
Since we had some people in our group that hadn't seen the Moffat Tunnel we decided to take a quick detour to check it out. There was a train waiting to go so we decided to wait and watch him enter the tunnel. It made our detour last a little longer then planned, but it was worth it.
We started up the trail and decided to eat lunch below timberline to stay out of the wind. We found a nice little open space to get out the table and chairs. We had two Explorers so this was one of those buffet-type lunches with everything laid out on a table because we have room to carry those extra supplies.
We were surprised that there weren't more people on the trail but the weather forecast was for snow. If there was any snow it had all melted by the time we got there and the weather was perfect. We got to the corner were there are the three lakes and when we got out to check it out the wind picked up and the temperature had dropped so it was a lot cooler than it was when we ate lunch. We all took some pictures, and then headed on up the next section of hill climb.
We headed up the trail to the big uphill climb before the rock wall. There are different lines you can take so each driver chose the line he or she felt most comfortable with. All the stock vehicles made it up without any trouble and enjoyed the little bit of a challenge to test out their vehicles. Then we headed up to the rock wall.
We stopped and everyone added their rock to the wall. We also signed the guest book and it said that it was the twelfth book that has been up the
re, one for each year. People have signed it from all fifty states except South Carolina. In the past it has been stolen, burned, and destroyed with an ice axe.
We stopped at tree line on the way down in the "Wizard of Oz" trees because they try so hard to grow in the cold and wind and it makes them twisted and gnarly. There were a few signs of snow in the trees but otherwise it was sunny and the trail was dry.
The rest of the trail was pretty uneventful. We stopped at the bottom, said our good-byes to those who had to go home, and then the rest of us stopped at Beau Jos for pizza.
