We ran this right after doing Fins & Things and it was just as scary as ever! We started up the steep hill at the beginning and ran into very few people through the course of the trail. We did see a Ranger on the trail to find out that Hell's Gate is not a sanctioned trail and was created by trail users. It was closed the day we were there.

After the first few uphills and downhills we came to the tippy spot where you go around the hill to the "S curve." The hills weren't too bad because we had just done the other trail and we were used to them. The S curve was a different story, though. Derek swung it a little wide and ended up a little sideways with his rear passenger-side tire off the ground about a foot. He couldn't safely back up and he doesn't have a safe place for people to stand on the back, so Tom got out the tow rope just in case. He managed to back up and get a better angle at the hill and made it down safely with a big grin on his face.

We ran up and down the hills and this time we took the Overlook trail too. It was worth it, giving us a great view of the Colorado River and the pavement and little cars below us. It was the first cliff we'd been on top of for the trip and it was really cool to see (and a short trip off the trail).

Working our way back got us started on the high part of the trail up and around The Black Hole. It was scary as always, but it wasn't as black as it was the last time due to the sun on it.

Our group was the only one on top of the fins and we took the time to play around the hot tubs. The Car Wash was big and seemed impossible so we did the Bath Tub instead. Then Ladd got brave and drove into the Car Wash. He gave it a good try but there was no climbing out the other side so he had to back out the way he came. It was cool to watch!

No one got in Mickey's Hot Tub.

Whale's Tail was a massive hill to come down off of the high fins. It was scary too but we all made it down without any problems.

We c
hecked out the Escalator but no one got in it. The guys climbed up into it but not without a little trouble. We went around the corner and all of us went through the Tip-Over Challenge like pros. Monica was playing around on the Play Hill next to it and couldn't make it up because of all the sand covering it. She came down hard enough and at a steep enough angle to actually bend her bumper down. The tailgate opens now!

We went out to the Overlook to check out Moab as the sun was going down. A quick run out the rocky area got us out in the sand next to Lion's Back. It was a great time as always and we got off the trail before the sun went down.

March 24, 2007

Led by Mike S.
Saturday turned out to be another day of threatening rain, so we did Hell’s Revenge instead of Lockhart Basin and Chicken Corners so we could stay on slickrock. We hit Hell’s Revenge early in the morning and we were well ahead of any others that were on the trail that…
