It was overcast and cold in Denver, and the roads were icy. We were expecting a nasty day, but as soon as we gained a bit of elevation on I-70 we popped above the fog to find blue skies. It was a gorgeous day, and one of the best days we'd seen on the ice. We met at 11:00 to pay for our wrist bands and then went into Georgetown for a nice lunch. That put us on the ice at about 12:30.

Bob had his Jeep and Monica had her Audi A4 with her friend Clinton along for the day. The shoreline of the lake was pretty torn up. Monica drove out and immediately got stuck in the snow there. People helped push her out, and she took a different path onto the ice that was wet but worked fine.

It was the first day of the season, and the ice was like glass. It made it pretty impossible to get our vehicles to go where we pointed them, a situation that is both funny and frustrating. Luckily, the real ice racing rigs chopped the ice up after the first few races and it got much easier.

The weather was so perfect that Monica took advantage of her convertible and raced the whole day with the Audi's top down. Everyone got a bit of a sunburn, too.

We had a great time racing each other, of course, and we were enjoying watching the Jeep Thrills rig race around the ice. Then, they asked Monica if she wanted to drive it. Are you crazy? Of course she did! It was a bit more complicated than she thought it would be due to the way the hand brake worked, but it was a blast. Clinton videoed her two times around the ice and it was painfully slow. It was a major contrast to see the Jeep Thrills owner drive it once she was done. It would be so much fun to own one of these rigs and learn how to really drive it.

We stayed until the shadows started creeping over the lake. The drive home was nice until we came into Denver where it had been a gross winter day all day. We got lucky, and we had a perfect day in Georgetown.

This was the Championships for Studs and Cheaters. We only made it for about an hour before we were too frozen and had to leave (and go to Beau Jo’s for pizza instead). It was pretty cool to see, though next year we’re going on a nice, sunny day. By…
