The ice races are always such a great way to kick off a new year. It had been snowing like crazy in Colorado for weeks, and we were right in the middle of another snow storm. Still, three of us were determined to get out on the ice no matter what it took to get there.

We met at Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs, and we weren't that late even though the way up there was slow and slick. It had snowed a few inches the night before and it was snowing again with no signs of stopping. We had a great lunch and headed out to the lake.

When we got there, it seemed that only one person from Our Gang was there. The tracks weren't set up yet, and they were shoveling a path from the parking area down to the lake. It looked like there was a few inches of snow on the lake, but it didn't look too bad. We hung out for awhile, but they didn't need us yet.

We decided to kill some time in Georgetown, so we went over to the Red Ram for hot chocolate. When we got back, people were racing. Though the crowd was smaller than usual, there were still quite a few vehicles there. Only a couple of the studs Jeeps were there, which meant that most of the time it was pretty quiet (and that was weird). There weren't very many Our Gang people there, with no yellow Our Gang jackets to be seen. It was kind of a strange day.

Racing was good, and it never stopped snowing. We didn't get our first glimpse of the ice beneath the snow until later in the day, when tires had managed to work their way through to the surface.

The three vehicles seemed to be pretty evenly matched, and we all got to race against each other. Sometimes it was difficult to get going from the starting line, but then it was pretty fast.

We were on our way out to dinner and Monica was following Walt in her Murano. Walt went through a deep snow drift and said later that he hoped Monica wouldn't follow him through that particular drift. She didn't notice in time (it was dark) and drove into it, getting really stuck. A fellow racer in a Kia hooked up the two vehicles and yanked her out of the snow.

We had dinner at the Red Ram, and it was packed full of people happy to be out of their houses. On the way there, we found a truck with a trailer with a cheater rig on it, and we hadn't seen them yet that day. It was half off the road and trying to get back on. We weren't much help, but we hung out just in case we could do something.

It was cold and snowy but it was a great day. The roads were pretty clear by the time we headed back to town. It was a great start to 2007!

Due to the forecast of snow and scheduling conflicts, few TrailDamage.com members were in attendance for the Ice Races this time. In fact, Julie and Bob S. were the only ones to make it. The drive out to the races was somewhat slow at times on I-70 due to the…
