Shelf Road
We went to the Cripple Creek Ice Festival before running Shelf Road. It looked like it was going to be a nice day for looking at some ice sculptures. This year, the Ice Festival had a lot of ice sculptures to look at and some new ones still being made. It was still very chilly at around 9am in Cripple Creek! After walking around for a short time, we walked back to the vehicles to start the first trail of the day, Shelf Road.
Because this winter has been so warm and without much snow, we did not expect any snow on the trail.
However, it had snowed a bit the day before. While most of Shelf Road was snow free, there were a few snowy patches in the shady areas. The shady areas didn't have more the one inch of snow.
We enjoyed the nice drive on Shelf Road. We ran into a few other vehicles. In one of the narrowest sections of the shelf part of the road, we did have to pass a pickup truck in a tight area. None of us had any issues with passing the truck.
We stopped near the end of Shelf Road for lunch. The weather near Cañon City was warmer than up near Cripple Creek. After lunch, we drove through Cañon City eastward to get to the Phantom Canyon trail.
