Caribou Creek
We had just completed Eldorado Mountain and checked out the Caribou ghost town. It was time for our second trail of the day, Caribou Creek. There were a few tourists that drove up the easy road from Nederland to check out the area as we made our way to the start of the trail. They watched us as we started the trail.
The trail started off being fairly dry and smooth, but it became a little rougher and wetter the further we went. There were some puddles that had less than an inch of ice covering them. Since Walt was in the lead he had all the fun breaking the ice covering the puddles.
It wasn't long until we reached the fencing protecting the marsh on our left. Not too far before the creek crossing, the fencing had been torn down and it looked as if some ATVs might have been running through the protected marsh area. Were were disappointed to see that people were abusing the area. It didn't make much sense, because staying on the trail was still a sloppy mess of fun. It was muddy -- not so muddy that it was a bog -- but enough to make it interesting.
Walt entered the muddy trail first, trying a line down the middle. His passenger-side tires slipped down into a crevice, leaving him quite tippy. He tried a couple of variations with the same result, so he backed up and took the far right line through the mud along the messy trail.
Ryan was next and he took the far right line with no problems. Bill took the same line, making it look easy. Jeffrey was next, and he decided to try a slight variation of the middle line. It was working, and then suddenly he was high-centered.
Jeffrey was all smiles as we were giving him a hard time about finding the only place on the entire trail where someone could get stuck. Bill turned around and pulled up for Jeffrey so his Jeep could be used as a winch point. It didn't take much of a pull and Jeffrey was free.
Cody was next, watching and learning, and he decided that his stock pickup would do best taking the far left line near the fence. He was right, and he drove right through the muddy section.
Mike was last to tackle the mud, and he took a slight variation of the left line with no problems.
We all crossed the creek and some of us tried to wash the mud off our rigs by hitting it a little harder than others.
We continued up the trail past the closed whoopdeedoos to a clearing just before the end of the trail where we stopped for lunch. We had a good time eating and laughing for awhile. It wasn't long before we packed up and made our way to the end of the trail.
Two trails down and two to go. We headed off to do West Magnolia.
